Im letzten der drei Teile, "Homecoming", kehren die Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter zurück in ihre Heimat, um Freunde und Familie zu treffen oder zu heiraten. Die Lebendigkeit lokaler Bräuche – Musik, Tanz, Lachen und reichlich Feuerwerk – verleiht der Dokumentation eine unerwartete Fröhlichkeit. Doch diese währt nur kurz: Bald heißt es zurückkehren zu den lärmenden Maschinen und dem Chaos der Fabriken.
Hier treibt Wang das beobachtende Dokumentarkino auf die Spitze. Er verzichtet gänzlich auf Off-Kommentare, musikalische Untermalung oder subtile redaktionelle Kniffe und strebt stattdessen danach, sich über lange Zeiträume hinweg in den Alltag der Gefilmten zu integrieren. Dabei versucht er jedoch nicht, sich unsichtbar zu machen. Manchmal nehmen die Protagonisten Bezug auf seine Anwesenheit.

In the last of the three parts, “Homecoming,” the workers return to their hometowns to see friends and family or to get married. The vibrancy of local customs—music, dance, laughter, and plenty of fireworks—lends the documentary an unexpected cheerfulness. But this lasts only briefly: Soon it’s time to return to the noisy machines and the chaos of the factories.
Here, Wang takes observational documentary filmmaking to the extreme. He completely forgoes voice-over commentary, background music, or subtle editorial tricks, striving instead to integrate himself into the daily lives of those he films over long periods of time. In doing so, however, he does not attempt to make himself invisible. Sometimes the protagonists acknowledge his presence.
