Leilas vier erwachsene Brüder wohnen arbeitslos und verschuldet immer noch im Haus der Eltern. Die vierzigjährige Leila kämpft darum, die Zukunft der Geschwister mit dem Kauf eines Ladens abzusichern. Dafür benötigt sie Startkapital, und auch der Vater braucht Geld, um seine Träume vom sozialen Aufstieg in der Großfamilie umzusetzen.
Roustaees packendes, wendungsreiches Drama zeigt einen Iran, der durch die Sanktionen des Westens, aber auch durch allgegenwärtige Korruption von einer Krise in die nächste steuert. Mit Starschauspielern besetzt, allen voran Taraneh Alidoosti, gelingt ihm ein hochspannendes, meisterlich inszeniertes Familienepos und zugleich eine Abrechnung mit dem Patriarchat.
Saeed Roustae (1989* in Teheran) studierte Regie an der Soureh Film-Universität. Seine Debütfilme „Life and a Day“ (2016) und „Just 6.5“ (2019) fanden international große Beachtung. Sein dritter Spielfilm „Leila’s Brothers“ lief im Wettbewerb von Cannes und gewann dort den FIPRESCI-Preis.
