1980: Abadan, das Zentrum der iranischen Ölindustrie im Süden des Landes, wird von irakischen Truppen belagert. Die Menschen verlassen ihre Stadt, nur wenige bleiben zurück: der vierzehnjährige Omid wartet mit seinem Großvater auf die Rückkehr seines älteren Bruders von der Front. Doch als die Lage aussichtslos wird, müssen auch die verbliebenen Einwohner ihre Heimat verlassen – und da gibt es ein verlassenes Boot im Hafen…
Sepideh Farsi erzählt ein zentrales Kapitel des Iran-Irak-Krieges mit den Mitteln des Animationsfilmes. Die in Paris lebende Filmemacherin hat die Erinnerungen an ihre Heimatstadt Abadan hochpoetisch umgesetzt, unterstützt von dem Kölner TrickStudio Lutterbeck.

Sepideh Farsi (1965* in Teheran) verließ den Iran schon in jungen Jahren, um Filmemacherin zu werden. Auf ihren ersten Langfilm „The World is my Home“ (1999) folgten zahlreiche international gefeierte Dokumentarfilme, etwa „Harat“ (2007), „Tehran without Permission“ (2009) und „7 Veils“ (2017) aber auch Spielfilme wie „Dreams of Dust“ (2003) und „The Gaze“ (2006). Die in Paris lebende Farsi arbeitet in unterschiedlichen Formaten und Medien: vom Handyfilm bis hin zu Animationsfilm. „The Siren“ eröffnete 2023 die Panorama-Sektion der Berlinale.

People leave their city, only a few remain behind: fourteen-year-old Omid waits with his grandfather for his older brother to return from the front. But when the situation becomes hopeless, the remaining inhabitants also have to leave their homes - and there is an abandoned boat in the harbor...
Sepideh Farsi tells a pivotal chapter of the Iran-Iraq war through the means of animated film. The filmmaker, who lives in Paris, has rendered the memories of her hometown Abadan in a highly poetic way, supported by the Cologne-based TrickStudio Lutterbeck.

Sepideh Farsi (1965* in Tehran) left Iran at a young age to become a filmmaker. Her first feature-length film, "The World is my Home" (1999), was followed by numerous internationally acclaimed documentaries, such as "Harat" (2007), "Tehran without Permission" (2009) and "7 Veils" (2017) but also feature films like "Dreams of Dust" (2003) and "The Gaze" (2006). Farsi, who lives in Paris, works in a variety of formats and media: from cell phone films to animated films. "The Siren" opened the Panorama section of the Berlinale in 2023.
