Anhand seiner Zusammenschau der großen Migrationsströme und der Entwicklung von Handel und
Rüstungsindustrie zeigt Raoul Peck, wie Europa durch die Entwicklung der Stahlindustrie immer weiter
entfernte Kriege führen konnte und in einen endlosen Kreislauf von Militarisierung, territorialen Eroberungen und Krieg eintrat. Von George Washington über die Monroe-Doktrin bis hin zu den Schrecken von Hiroshima und Nagasaki etablierten sich die USA als Weltgendarm.

Die leuchtenden Farben des Faschismus

In der letzten Folge zeigt Raoul Peck auf, warum die wahre Geschichte der USA mit den von ihnen beanspruchten Idealen von Freiheit und Demokratie grundsätzlich unvereinbar ist. Er enthüllt das Vorgehen bei der Vernichtung der Ureinwohner und das sklavenhalterische Erbe des Landes als die Grundlagen des institutionellen Rassismus von heute und zeigt, dass die historische Darstellung dieses Erbes von entscheidender Bedeutung für alle emanzipatorischen Kämpfe ist. Peck erinnert sich an seine Studienjahre in Berlin, die in vielerlei Hinsicht den Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichte bilden.

Killing at a Distance or How I Enjoyed the Journey
Based on his synopsis of the major migration flows and the development of trade and the
armaments industry, Raoul Peck shows how the development of the steel industry enabled Europe to fight ever more distant wars and entered into an endless cycle of militarization, territorial conquests, and war. From George Washington to the Monroe Doctrine to the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the U.S. established itself as the world's gendarme.

The bright colors of fascism
In the final episode, Raoul Peck reveals why the true history of the United States is fundamentally incompatible with its claimed ideals of freedom and democracy. He reveals the country's approach to the extermination of Native Americans and its slaveholding heritage as the foundations of today's institutional racism, and shows that the historical account of this heritage is crucial to all emancipatory struggles. Peck recalls his student years in Berlin, which in many ways form the center of this history.
