Eine Hommage an das fotografische Werk von Sebastião Salgado, einem ausgezeichneten Meister der Dokumentarfotografie. Gedreht von seinem Sohn Juliano und Wim Wenders, der mitunter selbst als Fotograf tätig ist. So entstand aus einer Mischung von Bewunderung und Empathie ein bildgewaltiger Film über das Werk des damals 70-jährigen Kamerakünstlers – und über die Fotografie selbst. Viele der Krisen und Katastrophen der 1980er und 1990er-Jahre, die Salgado erlebte und fotografierte, sind mittlerweile Geschichte und fast vergessen. Und doch wirken sie nach, als frühe Hinweise und Zeugnisse der inzwischen nicht mehr zu ignorierenden Klimakrise.
Was bleibt und sich ins Gedächtnis einprägt sind die Bildfindungen von Sebastião Salgado: Schwarzweiß-Fotografien, die zu Ikonen geworden sind. Kaum ein anderer Fotograf legte so Zeugnis ab vom menschlichen Leid. Sebastiao Salgado verstarb im Mai 2025.

Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (RJM), das vom 29.10.2025 – 15.03.2026 in einer großen Ausstellung Bilder des Fotografen in Köln ausstellt.
Zum Werk von Sebastião Salgado wird Dr. Anne Slenczka vom RJM vor Filmbeginn eine kurze Einführung geben.
A tribute to the photographic work of Sebastião Salgado, an outstanding master of documentary photography. Shot by his son Juliano and Wim Wenders, who sometimes works as a photographer himself. A mixture of admiration and empathy resulted in a visually stunning film about the work of the then 70-year-old camera artist - and about photography itself. Many of the crises and disasters of the 1980s and 1990s that Salgado experienced and photographed are now history and almost forgotten. And yet they still have an impact, as early references and testimonies to the climate crisis that can no longer be ignored.
What remains and remains etched in the memory are Sebastião Salgado's pictorial inventions: black and white photographs that have become icons. Hardly any other photographer has borne such witness to human suffering. Sebastiao Salgado passend away in May 2025.

Um tributo ao trabalho fotográfico de Sebastião Salgado, um notável mestre da fotografia documental. O filme foi filmado por seu filho Juliano e por Wim Wenders, que às vezes também trabalha como fotógrafo. Uma mistura de admiração e empatia resultou em um filme visualmente impressionante sobre o trabalho do artista da câmera, então com 70 anos, e sobre a própria fotografia. Muitas das crises e desastres das décadas de 1980 e 1990 que Salgado vivenciou e fotografou já são história e estão quase esquecidas. E, no entanto, elas ainda têm um impacto, como referências e testemunhos iniciais da crise climática que não pode mais ser ignorada.
As fotografias em preto e branco de Sebastião Salgado, que se tornaram ícones, permanecem gravadas em nossas memórias. Dificilmente algum outro fotógrafo testemunhou tanto o sofrimento humano. Sebastião Salgado morreu em maio de 2025.
