2011 wird der 19-jährige Abdul-Baset Saroot mit Charisma und frechen Spottliedern zu einem der Anführer der Proteste im syrischen Homs gegen das diktatorische Regime von Baschar al-Assad. Dafür opfert Baset auch seine Rolle als Torwart der syrischen Jugendnationalmannschaft. Ständig an Basets Seite ist sein Freund Ossama, der mit einer Handycam alle Aktionen filmt und auf Youtube ins Internet stellt. So wird Baset zu einem Medienstar auf arabischen Fernsehkanälen. Doch das Regime macht mit immer brutalerer Gewalt jeden Enthusiasmus zunichte. 2013 liegt Homs in Trümmern, und alle Träume sind zerstört.
Aus 300 Stunden Material hat der syrische Filmemacher Talal Derki ein bestürzendes Protokoll geschaffen, wie sich die Hoffnung auf Freiheit und Demokratie in pure Verzweiflung wandelt.

In 2011, 19-year-old Abdul-Baset Saroot's charisma and mocking songs made him one of the leaders of the protests in Homs, Syria, against the dictatorial regime of Bashar al-Assad. For this, Baset also sacrifices his role as goalkeeper for the Syrian national youth team. Constantly at Baset's side is his friend Ossama, who films all the actions and posts them on YouTube on the Internet. In this way, Baset becomes a media star on Arab television channels. But the regime destroys all enthusiasm with increasingly brutal violence. In 2013, Homs lies in ruins, and all dreams are shattered.
